With an idyllic location on Florida’s Treasure Coast, the unpretentious barrier island community known as Vero Beach offers both seaside charm and elegance. Known and loved for its cultural landscape and laid-back, small-town atmosphere, Vero Beach is often called The Hamptons of Florida. There is a twenty-eight-mile barrier island to the east and to the west is the Indian River estuary, both adding to the natural beauty of the community. Also contributing to its beautiful aesthetic are canopies of palms and oaks and twenty-eight miles of uninterrupted, glistening white sand beaches. Furthermore, because of strict density and height codes, the housing inventory of the island remains unchanged which prevents sprawl and supports appreciation.
Vero Beach has a highly educated populace and has long been considered an oasis for outdoor and cultural enthusiasts of all interests and ages. It has been called one of the country’s One Hundred Great Small Arts Towns, and its reputation as such stems from the assortment of musical, theater, visual, and literary groups, all of the highest caliber. Vero Beach also boasts myriad boat launches, eighteen-hole golf courses, and lush groves that produce citrus for the world. The mainland of Vero has a charming downtown historic district that is undergoing a dramatic transformation. It is filled with restaurants and shops. Also on the mainland are theaters, shopping centers, more restaurants, tennis and swim facilities, and The Indian River Memorial Hospital/The Cleveland Clinic. Three fixed bridges over the Indian River connect the mainland to the barrier island that also encompasses excellent options for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The heart of Vero’s island is Ocean Drive that boasts a boardwalk dotted with parks, shops, and eateries. Because the Indian River separates the island from the mainland, both parts of the city can enjoy easy access to the recreational opportunities that include deepwater mooring, boating, sailing, fishing, kayaking, and birding.
With so many desirable features, Vero Beach is a highly sought-after address on the Treasure Coast. The community has been especially popular among affluent retirees, investors, and families. There are no high-rise condos in Vero Beach, but there are numerous Vero Beach single-family homes from which to choose. Homes for sale in Vero Beach tend to have listing prices lower than the barrier islands of Palm Beach and Miami. Vero Beach goes way back: all the way to the Pleistocene, 2,580,00 to 11,7000 years ago. While at first archaeologists didn’t believe humans were present in the Americas during the Ice Age, archaeologists confirmed that human remains found in Vero Beach in 1915 are indeed from the Pleistocene.
Nowadays, Vero Beach enjoys the fruits of a Spanish treasure fleet that wrecked off its coast in 1715 – literally – treasure hunters still find gold and silver today, thus the Treasure Coast name. Another beneficiary of Henry Flagler’s railroad route from 1893, Vero was chartered in 1919 and later renamed Vero Beach.
Home to Piper Aircraft and Historic Dodgertown, Vero Beach enjoy both beachfront and mainland activities. With a population of more than 17,000 people with a median income of nearly $40,000, Vero Beach offers shopping in two malls, as well as offers sightseeing in numerous National Register of Historic Places.
