An anglicized form of the name for the Jaega Native American people who lived in the area, Hobe Sound was part of the 1815 Gomez grant given by Spain to Don Eusebio who then sold the area to Joseph Delespine for a $1 per acre. For a brief time during the land boom of the 1920s, Hobe Sound was renamed “Picture City” as part of a plan to make the city a location to shoot and produce movie pictures. After the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, the name and the plans faded out.
